A frame's size is the size of the art it holds — an 11×14 frame fits an 11×14 print, not an 11×14 wall footprint. Add a mat and the same frame displays one size smaller. Poster sizes and photo sizes are one list, not two: an 18×24 poster frame is simply an 18×24 frame. Four things worth knowing before you order — they cover most of what people get wrong about frame sizing.
The number is the art, not the frame
An 11×14 frame holds an 11×14 print. The frame itself is larger — how much larger depends on the moulding. Actual outer dimensions are listed on every product page, which is what you need when you are planning a gallery wall.
A mat drops you one size
Matted frames display art one standard size smaller — an 11×14 frame with a mat shows an 8×10 print. Buy the frame in the size of the frame you want on the wall, and check the mat opening for the size of the art going in it.
Measure the art, not the old frame
Measure your print edge to edge in inches, width first. If it lands between two standard sizes, size up and use a mat to bridge the gap — that reads as deliberate, where a too-small frame means trimming the art.
Consistent sizes make galleries line up
Because our sizes are standardized across collections, a 5×7 and an 8×10 from different lines still hang with even gaps. Keep 2–3 inches between frames and any mix of these sizes looks intentional.

01 What are the most common picture frame sizes?
For photos: 4×6, 5×7, 8×10 and 11×14. For posters and art: 11×17, 12×18, 18×24 and 24×36. Judging by what people search for, 11×14 and 18×24 are the two biggest by a wide margin.
02 Does 11×14 mean the frame or the photo?
The photo. Frame sizes describe the art the frame holds, so an 11×14 frame fits an 11×14 print. The outer dimensions are bigger and vary by moulding — each product page lists them.
03 What size frame do I need for an 8×10 print?
Either an 8×10 frame with no mat, or an 11×14 frame with a mat cut for 8×10 — the matted option takes up more wall and gives the print room to breathe.
04 Is 12×18 a standard frame size?
Yes — 12×18 is a common photo-lab and print-shop size, and one of the more searched sizes we stock. It is a 2:3 ratio, the same shape as a 4×6 or 8×12.
05 What size frame fits a standard movie poster?
24×36 for a full-size poster and 22×28 for a half sheet. Smaller reproduction posters are usually 18×24 or 11×17.
06 My print is between two standard sizes — what now?
Go up to the next standard size and use a mat to cover the gap. Trimming art to fit a smaller frame is rarely worth it, and a mat makes the difference look intended.
